Majdanpek and Donji Milanovac
The cities Donji Milanovac at the Danube in East-Serbia and Majdanpek in the mountains behind lie close to each other. The first is located in the middle of the National Park Djerdap and is a Starting Point for many Visitors. In 1972 a hydroelectric powerplant was built in cooperation with Romania and the water level of the Danube rose for more than 10 meters. Numerous villages were abandoned and newly founded on higher locations.
Majdanpek is a mining city. The copper mine is a surface mine which formed a lake. The workers' houses were built up the steep valley. Inhabitants like the nurse who's working near the city center have to climb a lot of stairs to get to their homes.
